Home Healthcare Services vs Private Duty Home Care Services

Home healthcare and private duty services were both established to assist the elderly living at home in need.

Home healthcare services are typically medically necessary.  They are paid for by Medicare or other health insurance and have been ordered by a physician. Examples of home healthcare services include injections, wound care, therapies (physical, occupational, and/or speech), and other types of care that a doctor or nurse could specialize in.

Private duty home care services are typically personal care-type services that assist with activities of daily living. Examples include bathing, toileting, showering/bathing, eating, and dressing. In addition to assisting with important personal care responsibilities – private duty home care services can also assist with errand running, light housekeeping, light meal preparation, medication reminders, light laundry, grocery shopping, transportation to doctor appointments, going for walks, getting the mail, and other activities. Private duty home care services are typically paid for privately or using long-term care insurance, reverse mortgage proceeds, Veterans Aid and Attendance pension benefits, or some combination of any of these programs.  Additionally, some Medicare Advantage plans are beginning to pay for these services.
