Since 1987, March has been recognized as Developmental Disability Awareness Month – a month dedicated to “increasing public awareness of the needs and potential of Americans with developmental disabilities.” According to the CDC, developmental disabilities are a “group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas.” These conditions oftentimes impose a variety of daily challenges that those living with them bravely endure.
2024’s Theme: “A World of Opportunity”
In 2024, the theme of Developmental Disability Awareness Month is “A World of Opportunity” – a theme that hits home at Home to Stay. From our proud partnership with the DDD to our newly introduced Meaningful Day Program, Home to Stay is working to create opportunities for the developmentally disabled in our area that may have not existed for them beforehand. Our mission aligns directly with the motive of this year’s goal, which can be read below.
“Our goal is to build a community that’s committed to creating a world where everyone can do well and succeed.”
– National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities
Home to Stay Programs for Those Living with Developmental Disabilities
In line with the theme of this year’s Developmental Disability Awareness Month, Home to Stay emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities for everyone. With our two programs, we can adapt to those who are looking for opportunities in their community, such as employment or community support, or those who are looking for a meaningful everyday lifestyle in the comfort of their own home.
Division of Developmental Disabilities
Home to Stay is an approved provider with the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), allowing us to provide quality services to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. This comes with an assortment of services, all with important purposes that can cater to many different situations that developmental disabilities can cause. These services are as follows: behavioral support, career planning, cognitive rehabilitation, community-based support, community inclusion services, individual support, natural support training, supported employment – individual, and supported employment – small group.
Meaningful Day Program
Home to Stay’s very own Meaningful Day Program provides exactly what it is titled, a meaningful day for those enrolled. While group settings are great, we understand that staying in the comfort of your own home is better for some. By providing a structured, self-directed day, those living at home can live safely and happily doing the things they love. Learn more about how our case managers can implement a meaningful day.
Make this Developmental Disability Awareness Month one to remember by celebrating those that this month is all about. Empower them to break down barriers and live the life that they want and deserve.
